Taiwan card spending jumps 88% as credit balances rise
June retail sales hit $24.82b whilst overdue credit improved to 0.16%
Taiwan’s credit card spending rose sharply in June 2026, whilst electronic payment accounts continued to add users, according to data from the Financial Supervisory Commission.
Monthly credit card retail sales reached $24.82b (NT$788.7b) in June, up from $13.22b (NT$420.2b) in May.
Taiwan had 59.81 million effective credit cards at the end of June, compared with 59.71 million a month earlier. Active cards stood at 40.11 million, slightly down from 40.13 million in May.
Outstanding revolving credit increased to $3.69b (NT$117.3b) from $3.63b (NT$115.4b), whilst outstanding instalment balances rose to about $8.37b (NT$266b) from $5.10b (NT$162b).
Credit card write-offs increased to about $18.6m (NT$590m) from $17.0m (NT$540m) in May. The delinquency ratio for credit overdue by more than three months fell to 0.16% from 0.23%.
Taiwan had 32 credit card issuers operating as of June.
For cash cards, 13 financial institutions were operating in the market. The number of effective cash cards remained at 270,000, whilst outstanding cash card loans were unchanged at $299m (NT$9.5b).
Monthly cash card write-offs rose to about $818,000 (NT$26m) from $630,000 (NT$20m), whilst the delinquency ratio edged down to 0.886% from 0.895%.
Electronic payment services also continued to expand their user base.
Taiwan had 10 specialised electronic payment institutions and 19 institutions offering electronic payments alongsde other businesses.
Electronic payment account users increased to 41.13 million from 40.77 million in May.
Payments collected or made on behalf of customers fell to $933m (NT$29.65b) from $1.00b (NT$31.87b).
Small-value domestic and international remittances rose slightly to $543m (NT$17.27b) from $539m (NT$17.12b).
Stored-value funds reached $1.01b (NT$32b), up from $998m (NT$31.71b), whilst balances held in electronic payment accounts fell to $621m (NT$19.72b) from $664m (NT$21.1b).
For stored-value cards, the number of effective cards increased to 203.69 million from 203.06 million.
Cards in use fell to 13.22 million from 13.79 million, whilst monthly retail sales declined to $193m (NT$6.12b) from $208m (NT$6.6b).
Across all non-cash payments, Taiwan recorded 4.604 billion transactions worth $162.0b (NT$5.15t) in the first half of 2026.
