Vietcombank leads profits with $983.1m as smaller banks outgrow giants

The bank recorded a 36.7% annual rise in H1 2026.

Vietnam's largest banks remained the country's top profit earners in the first half of 2026 (H1 2026), whilst smaller lenders recorded the fastest earnings growth as stronger balance sheets, faster credit expansion and the early impact of restructuring efforts boosted performance.

Amongst 27 listed and unlisted banks that have reported first-half results, 23 posted higher profits than a year earlier, reported The Investor.

Amongst the country's Big Four lenders, Vietcombank remained the most profitable, reporting pre-tax profit of $1.1b (VND29.22t), up 33.5% year-on-year (YoY). VietinBank followed with pre-tax profit of $983.1m (VND25.87t), an increase of 36.7% YoY.

Smaller banks, however, outpaced their larger peers in terms of growth. BVBank posted the strongest increase, with first-half pre-tax profit rising 486% YoY to $20.8m (VND547b).

ABBank reported pre-tax profit of $114.8m (VND3.02t), up 80% YoY, whilst Vietbank's pre-tax profit rose 79.4% YoY to $35.1m (VND923b). PGBank recorded pre-tax profit of $16.7m (VND439.7b), up 65.7% YoY.

National Citizen Bank reported after-tax profit of $27.6m (VND726.7b), a 57% increase from the same period last year.
