ANZ's scam losses down 24% in Oct-June

The Aussie bank said it prevented and recovered A$100m in scam and fraud-related funds.

Australia and New Zealand Banking Corporation (ANZ) saw scam losses fall 24% between October 2025 to June 2026 compared to the same period the previous year.

The Australia-headquartered bank said that it prevented and recovered over A$100m in scam and fraud-related funds during the period.

ANZ said that its First Responders team resolved 94% of scam-related calls at first contact and handled nearly 170,000 calls during the period.

Over 476,000 payments were abandoned after a Confirmation of Payee mismatch warning during the same period, ANZ said.

Goods and services scams—-including online shopping traps—were the most common scam experienced by ANZ customers.

Impersonation (non-bank), investment, romance, friendship, and bank impersonation scams followed in frequency.

ANZ recently flagged scam-coaching, where scammers give customers with scripts, cover stories, and instructions on how to respond to bank staff, with the goal of bypassing bank security measures.
