National Australia Bank insurance app cuts bushfire risk to 1.5%

Customers can use the free rating tool to identify property upgrades before the fire season.

National Australia Bank (NAB) has launched a new initiative to help homeowners lower their insurance premiums by improving their bushfire preparedness.

According to data from the programme, homes with a low one to two-star rating face a 50% to 80% risk of severe damage during a bushfire. This risk drops to between 7% and 18% for homes with a three to four-star rating, and falls to just 1.5% for 5-star rated properties.

NAB Home Insurance customers can access the Resilient Building Council’s free Bushfire Resilience Rating app. 

The tool assesses a property's local bushfire risk and provides tailored actions to upgrade the home's defences ahead of the fire season.

Completing these safety upgrades can directly reduce home insurance premium costs, offering financial relief as households face rising living expenses. 

NAB Personal Banking Group Executive Ana Marinkovic stated that the initiative aims to protect families, properties, and financial well-being as natural disasters become more frequent and severe.

NAB is a founding partner of the Resilient Building Council and co-funded the initial development of the bushfire app in 2022, followed by an expansion in 2025 to cover floods, storms, and cyclones.

The underlying insurance policies are underwritten by Allianz Australia.
