Hong Kong’s revolving credit line originations contract more slowly

The number of consumers carrying revolving line balances fell by 5.5%.

Revolving lines in Hong Kong remained subdued in the Q2 2026 period, although the rate of contraction has slowed, according to data from TransUnion.

Origination volumes in Q1 declined by 7.8% year-on-year (YoY), whilst outstanding balances inched up 0.1%.

This marked a “considerably slower rate of decline” compared to the previous quarter period measured.

“This sustained contraction in new account originations occurred as the market continued to normalise following the withdrawal of low-limit revolving line products amid elevated delinquencies,” TransUnion said.

The number of consumers carrying revolving line balances fell 5.5% YoY, whilst average balances amongst active borrowers rose 5.9% YoY.

This indicates that there is continued engagement amongst consumers maintaining these facilities, said TransUnion.
