ANZ customers spend $4.8b during FIFA World Cup on food and apparel

Spending rose for takeaway food, sporting apparel, bars, and hotels.

ANZ Bank’s customers have so far spent over $4.84b (A$7b) during the FIFA World Cup period, mostly on food, accommodation, and sporting apparel.

The Australian bank recorded spending uplifts across takeaway food (up 6.75%), cafes and restaurants (up 5.5%), bars and hotels (up 5.2%), and sporting apparel (up 9.3%) during the period, it said on 7 July 2026.

The 2026 Fifa Men’s World Cup is set to hold its final match on 19 July.

During the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup, customer spending increased 8.2% year-on-year to $7.62b (A$11b), ANZ said.

The data suggests major sporting events are powerful influencers of local consumer behaviour and spending patterns, the bank said.

ANZ posted a $2.63b profit for the six-month period that ended on 31 March 2026.

The bank also extended Saturday operations in 27 of its branches in Australia. Whilst over-the-counter services are not available on weekends, the branches will be available for home loans, relationship banking, and specialist support.
