BEA fee income beats expectations in H1 but provisions rise 16.5%

The Hong Kong lender’s mainland China CRE cleanup continues.

Bank of East Asia (BEA)’s non-interest income  performed better-than-expected in the first six months of 2026, but profitability and bad loans remain key weaknesses, said CreditSights by Fitch Solutions.

The Hong Kong-based lender’s earnings were "broadly flat” during the first half period, with net profit increasing only by 0.4% year-on-year to $306.2m (HK$2.4b).

Net fee income rose 16.1% YoY, lifted by investment product sales, trust and fiduciary fees, and bancassurance income.

This was offset by provisions rising 16.5% YoY to HK$3b, with 69% related to mainland China or Hong Kong commercial real estate (CRE). Credit costs also remained elevated during the period, CreditSight said.

“Overall, BEA's H1 2026 results were broadly in line with our expectations, with non-interest income doing better than expected and serving as the key earnings driver, and credit costs remaining elevated, as the bank continues to work through its legacy mainland China CRE exposure,” said CreditSights.

CreditSights expects this trend to persist into H2 2026.

“Profitability and [non-performing loan (NPL)] coverage remain the key weaknesses, while capital is a key strength,” it said.

BEA guided for slightly lower provisions in H2 compared to H1, although a larger part of it will go to mainland China as management continues its cleanup of legacy CRE exposures, CreditSights said.
