Taiwan private banks buoyed by mergers and semiconductor demand

Some lenders’ mergers are expected to expand the franchise and improve profitability.

Merger activity as well as strong demand for semiconductor and AI products are positives for Taiwan’s private banks.

Merger activity is driving positive momentum for some lenders, notably Taishin International bank, Bank SinoPac, and SinoPac Financial Holdings, Fitch Ratings said. These mergers are expected to expand franchise and improve profitability.

Strong demand for semiconductor and AI-related products should support Taiwan’s economy, and in turn support private banks’ “stable” rating from Fitch.

“Fitch views rating downside as limited unless weaker global demand for Taiwan’s exports causes a severe and sustained economic downturn, leading to significant financial deterioration at the banks,” Fitch said in the commentary, “Resilient Economy Supports Taiwan Private Banks’ Ratings”, published on 27 July 2026.

The banking sector remains constrained by its high fragmentation, which Fitch said limits banks’ ability to materially improve their financial performance.

Taiwanese banks’ asset quality, core profitability, capitalisation, and liquidity are all expected to remain stable.

“Profit growth should benefit from solid loan expansion, higher fee income and moderate credit costs,” Fitch said.

Fitch said that its rated private banks should maintain adequate capitalisation and stable liquidity.

The US-Taiwan trade agreement earlier in 2026 had eased the banking sector’s tariff-related risks, according to an earlier report by Fitch Ratings, which estimated loan growth to hit high single digits.
